What Happens In New York Shouldn’t Stay in New York

By Mary Mancini

Newsday is reporting that thousands of voters could be turned away from the polls due to inconsistent voter records:

A new database compares voter information to other government data and flags mismatches or duplicate records. That’s a requirement of the Help America Vote Act, which aims to improve voting accuracy and access for the disabled.

Board spokesman Robert Brehm says the problem generally originates with a voter incorrectly documenting a move, name change or variation in personal data.

County election boards are responsible for determining who is legally registered based on criteria specific to their county and often open to interpretation. To avoid showing up at the polls and not being on the rolls due to a real or perceived flaw in your registration, make sure to confirm with your county election commission that you are on the roll and that your information is complete and up to date.

Little stories like these, buried reported on the interior most pages of the local daily - if your city even has one - are like little nuggets of warning. Take heed.
